About the Society

The Oxford Physics Society exists to promote and encourage an interest in Physics throughout the University and to provide opportunities for physicists and people with an interest in Physics to get to know each other. The society is open to anyone who wants to attend (so you don’t have to be a member of the University).

During term time the Oxford Physics Society organises regular talks which are held in the Lindemann Lecture Theatre of the Clarendon Laboratory in the Physics Department (the entrance is shown in the picture to the right). Follow this link to see an aerial map. The society also organises social events. To see the societies’ events this term, look at the page ‘Termcard for TT 2009′.

Talks cost £2 for non-members, while entrance to social events usually costs around £2. Alternatively you can join the society for life, which allows you to attend the talks for free and gives you discounted entrance to social events. Life membership costs £8, and for further information about becoming a member please look at the page ‘How to join’. Talks usually last about an hour and are followed by free refreshments, providing you with the opportunity to meet other people interested in Physics. There is also an opportunity to ask the speaker questions about their talk.

In Hilary Term 2009 the society hosted seven talks, including those given by Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Simon Singh. The society also hosted the first talk in the 2009 Ig Nobel Tour of the U.K. on March 7, which was part of the National Science and Engineering Week.

In Michaelmas 2008 the society had the honour of hosting talks by Sir Roger Penrose and Professor Steve Cowley, the Director of UKAEA Culham. In the year 2007/2008 the society has also held talks by Prof Frank Close OBE, author of ‘The Cosmic Onion’ and ‘The Void’, as well as Dr Chris Lintott, copresenter of The Sky at Night.

We are affiliated to Nexus, the student wing of the Institute of Physics.

The Oxford Physics Society (Physsoc) is doing its best to organise an awesome physics-filled year for you all, and we hope you’ll be wanting to come to as many of the events as possible. And if anyone has any particular speaker they’d like to hear, or any ideas for events, then e-mail us and we’ll put it into consideration – we want to know what you want us to put on.
